Oakeley Slate Mine - Winch
Oakeley Slate Quarry 10299

Oakeley Slate Quarry: Winch

I didn't think I'd get to see much more gear in Oakeley than I already have done but by surprise I happened upon this old winch in a very remote and long forgotten corner of the mine.

It looks like it's been fashioned from two legs of a tripod crane, and wedged into the level obviously to up-haul from the level to the right. I guess it was on a gradient? It's collapsed just a few feet out of the range of the camera, both beyond the winch and to the right.

The winch is in the Old Vein but it's facing what I guess must be a connecting level to the Back Vein. The winch stands on other tram rails, so obviously when the winch was put in there was no need to tram that way anymore.

The rock all around is very bad indeed.
